And so I go into the session, Im invited there with every one of my staff members. So now she and I can sit on the same side of the desk, put the numbers up there on the screen and say you know what, I think youre better than this. Because obviously if I want to be protected from the chaos of the universe and Im a player in this environment, who are the people that are going to completely agree with anything you tell them on tell them on the problem? So the first step in leading anyone is to win their trust. And so I wish there were ways for me to sort out their character before I brought them in because that would have a huge impact on the kids we would end up offering scholarship money to. And so we just dont tolerate any kind of whining in any part of any practice, and hopefully theres no whining behind our backs either. To the minute, its telling me whats going to happen in every single second of this practice. What is our test? And what we do with a cauldron is were trying to figure out a way within the context of our practice to get everyone to compete like theres no tomorrow. Everything has a different quality. What you have to recruit and who you have to hire is character. No standards, no respect for authority. So who am I in this player conference? And this was a game changer for us in practice, because before you came to practice the next day you could go to our bulletin board and in 28 different categories you would see where you ranked on the team. I remember how excited everyone was, and how impressed we all were when Coach Dorrance shared his 12 Core Values. He also requires them to memorize the core value quotations and he tests them in front of the team and in every player conference. Hes an unbelievable man, but hes incredibly demanding.. Anson: So basically we have this hidden language the players know that Im using with the press thats designed to sort of protect them, but also designed to let them know theyre not good enough yet. Coach Dorrance: Well, I think what youre trying to do within the context of what youre talking about in the work world, but this applies in our stuff incredibly. So I pulled her aside and I said, you know, so-and-so, Im sorry, but shut up. Anson: Well, because of my experience. Then all of a sudden. There was nothing inspiring about them, and I was thinking gosh, none of this stuff works. And you dont want them to blame anyone else. $200 per post at $10/CPM. Maybe you can let us in on the secret. So tell us, how do you convince some woman to transfer or to quit the team? Now, does this mean in loving them, you dont set standards for them? Anson has 40 years in his coaching career and hes lost less than 70 games. So basically thats the construction of our player conference, which takes me out of the subjective mode. And for me, because talent is so attractive and because you look at talent and you think I have taken that talent to a world championship or an Olympic gold medal, I have to sign that kid, and all of a sudden they come in and theyre toxic, and then yeah, youre playing them, but, you know, you dont know if playing them is helping you or hurting you because everyone hates them, everyone hates playing with them even though they are good players. So please dont be confused about this man. And thats one of the greatest compliments Ive ever received, even though its sort of framed as a backhanded compliment. Anson Dorrance. For example, the first core value is we dont whine. It is paired with the following quote from George Bernard Shaw: The true joy in life is to be a force of fortune instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. It would make you think twice before complaining about a lack of playing time, or anything else. I was just talking to a restaurant owner who was struggling to find the right mix of workers for whatever reason that might be. But I think its an amazing thing to hear you talk about how strong your core values are, and the quality of character of your players. So if a kid comes in and they havent done very well that season, and this is a post season review, they all have a protective narrative thats usually, in my environment, organized and I guess constructed in a loop with their parents. Anson: Well, actually, Im reading all the time, but most of the ideas we bring in practice dont come directly from the reading, they just come from us looking at this thinking you know what, this isnt working. If theyre below the line and theyre not on scholarship, I try to get them to quit. So part of this is you as a leader, investing the time consuming, but Ill tell you an incredibly rich thing about relationships. You have to lead verbally. Each year the players grade themselves and their teammates on the extent to which they embody the core values. Now theres only one of those things that I wont touch, that whatever score they give themselves I will not argue with them, well just put it down as theyve told me. And so were constantly reviewing our own performances and constantly trying to tweak it to change it. If they wanted to work for you, they would not be in the bottom 10%. 1-on-1 is your ability to beat someone off the dribble or stop them. One is the cauldron. Everything you read in his book is absolutely true. We have won 22 national championships. Basically these human wrecks, because the parents have absolutely spoiled them.
